One of the central themes I wanted to highlight in this first book of the series is how environmental factors influence the development and culture of different peoples.

I chose to juxtapose the harsh winters of Northern Europe, which historically fostered a warlike culture among the Nordic and Viking races, with the more temperate and agrarian-based societies of Southern Europe and North Africa.

The continents of my world, "Tol," are inspired by Northern Europe and Northern Africa, with the Mediterranean acting as a connecting sea. This choice immediately grounds readers in a familiar yet fantastical setting, enhancing their immersion in the story.

The setting's characteristics deeply influence the characters and plot. Imagine the impact of bitter cold winters with limited daylight and icy winds on a society's survival instincts and cultural values. In "Resistance," these conditions fuel conflict and shape the behaviours of both aggressors and resistance fighters.

The inspiration for my book's setting stemmed from historical research into Northern European and Northern African cultures. I aimed to capture the harshness of Northern lands while overlaying a Southern continent reminiscent of the vast plains and mountain ranges of the American Northwest. Each race in "Tol" evolved within distinct environments that shaped their identities and interactions.

Developing such a detailed setting posed challenges, particularly in maintaining consistency and keeping readers engaged from the outset. World-building isn't just about creating a backdrop but ensuring it remains integral to character development and plot progression throughout the narrative.

Geographical and environmental aspects play a crucial role in how characters experience and navigate their world. The stark contrast between the Northern and Southern continents in "Resistance" fuels the central conflicts of the story. The harsh conditions of the North breed a resilient and warlike culture, while the fertile South fosters a more settled lifestyle. These dynamics create a rich backdrop against which characters evolve and the plot unfolds.

As an author, balancing world-building with character development and plot advancement was paramount. Maintaining a vivid and consistent portrayal of "Tol" requires strategic planning and attention to sensory details—sights, sounds, smells, touch, and taste—that immerse readers fully in the narrative.

Join me on this exploration of how environmental and cultural influences shape storytelling in fantasy literature. Whether you're an aspiring writer or a fan of immersive world-building, I invite you to delve into the world of Resistance (Chaos - Tol's Bane, Book 1) and share your thoughts on the interplay between setting and narrative development.
